Beautiful Lighting Helps Keep Senior Citizens Independent

Beautiful Lighting Helps Seniors Stay Safe at Home

The right lighting makes homes safer and more comfortable for senior citizens. Phil Blosser is a Central Virginia lighting designer who provides beautiful lighting solutions tailored to the needs of older adults.

Margaret P Calkins, PhD reports in Senior Journal.com that “older people require three times the amount of light to see as well as younger people but are more sensitive to glare.” Since reduced visibility can lead to falls, proper lighting is an important safety consideration.

Phil Blosser discourages seniors from adding a “brighter bulb in the center of the room” which increases glare and casts shadows on work surfaces like kitchen counters. Instead he lights work surfaces directly – creating safe, effective lighting and a sense of beauty and drama.

Watch this video to hear Phil explain his approach and show some compelling “before and after” pictures of the gorgeous spaces he has designed. For seniors who want to live independently, a lighting overhaul may keep them safer and renew their love for their living spaces.
