The holiday seasons should be a joyous time, one spent with loved ones. But for some of our clients, especially those who live a far distance from their loved ones, it can feel a bit lonely. Our client, Ava* faced this challenge recently. She didn’t want her mom, Beverly*, to feel alone during the holidays. However, Ava’s responsibilities coupled with the fact that she lives across the country, means that getting time off to visit her mom is incredibly difficult. Since Beverly’s health is frail, it felt impossible to have her travel the distance to stay with Ava and the family. Ava needed someone to step in, filling in for the family until she was able to visit.
So she reached out to Kim Volker at Care is There. Kim worked with Ava and Beverly to come up with a plan: Kim would check in on Beverly on a regular basis, step in to advocate for her, keep an eye on the event calendar at the facility where Beverly lives, and ensure Beverly always knew that she had someone in her corner. And that her family cared.
This assistance was especially beneficial during the facility’s Family Night. For this event, all of the residents’ families were invited to enjoy a special holiday dinner with their loved ones. Ava wasn’t able to make it, but Kim was! She attended on Ava’s behalf and kept Beverly company during the dinner. They spent the evening laughing, talking, taking photos and sending them to Ava. Kim even helped Beverly videochat with Ava during the event.
Ava had the peace of knowing that her mom didn’t feel forgotten nor isolated during this joyous holiday event, and Beveraly got to enjoy the evening with her new friend.
