When the summer heat rises, it affects older adults more than the rest of us.
Why? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that:
- Older adults do not adjust as well as young people to sudden changes in temperature.
- They are more likely to have a chronic medical condition that changes normal body responses to heat.
- They are more likely to take prescription medicines that impair the body’s ability to regulate its temperature or that inhibit perspiration.
Read more about the signs and symptoms of heat-related stress and how you can protect your elderly loved ones by reading the CDC’s article “Heat Stress in Older Adults.”
